Remedial massage is a technique which manipulates the soft tissue of the body for specific therapeutic effect. It is useful when the patient is suffering from a particular muscular tension or chronic pain. Remedial massage therapists will assess where you may need treatment and determine which muscle may be giving you trouble before utilising relevant massage techniques and lubricants to provide remedial treatment.
Swedish massage is the most common therapeutic massage system in the west and as the name implies, was devised in Sweden. This massage technique can be administered slow and gently or vigorously depending on the licensed practitioner and the requests of the client. In Swedish massage, the therapist will first lubricate the treatment area with a massage cream or oil and then proceed through a series of movements in order to warm up the muscles and relieve muscular tension. Swedish massage can be very effective in promoting relaxation.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage targets the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia. Deep tissue massage utilises many of the same techniques as Swedish massage but it is administered with more pressure in order to access the deep connective tissues and thicker muscles. The purpose of deep tissue massage is to release tension and toxins held within muscle fibres. This massage technique is also useful to promote oxygen circulation and blood flow.
Neuromuscular massage is commonly referred to as trigger point myotherapy. The technique can be effective in the treatment of lower back pain. The therapist will utilise various pressures with fingers, knuckles and elbows and press directly on the muscle spasms from 10-30 seconds to reduce muscle spasticity.
